YouTuber and speedrunner “darbian” recently set a new world record for the original Super Mario Bros.—by beating his own record.
Previously, darbian completed the game in just 4:57:647. In his latest and greatest attempt, he shaved 387 milliseconds off his time, which clocked in at 4:57:260. The deciding moment comes in around 3:31 in the video above, when he manages to save a jump on a warp pipe.
Notably, darbian’s record is for any percentage (or “any%”) speedruns of Super Mario Bros., which only require defeating Bowser and do allow warping between levels, hence darbian’s jump to level eight.
Darbian says he’s finished with Super Mario Bros. for now. “I have reached my potential in this category,” he said of his accomplishment. “I’m done! My quest is over.” Fortunately, there are plenty of other games for him to speedrun, many of which he’s already attempted, including The Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse, World of Illusion and Wally Bear and the NO! Gang.
Some people take the term "gotta go fast" and apply it to games. He who completed the latest speedrun of the notoriously hard Dark Souls 3 went really fast and made it in under 90 minutes!
Just recently, people were amazed that someone could complete Dark Souls III under two hours. This time Japanese youtuber "muzi_nasu" completed the whole of Dark Souls 3 in 1 hour, 29 minutes and 10 seconds! The in-game timer said he did it in 1: 23: 18, but in reality it took him 1: 29: 10 to finish the game (the in-game timer doesn't account for load times).
A Twitch streamer by the name of Distortion2 managed to complete the game in 1 hour, 34 minutes and 05 seconds (1: 27: 45 in-game time), and he also killed all optional bosses. In other words, Distortion2 only needed five more minutes to kill five bosses.
Dark Souls 3 is coming up on its April 12 Western release and only just released in Japan, so we are just scraping the iceberg of Dark Souls 3 speedruns. Muzi_Nasu said him self that he believed that he probably could do it in 80 minutes without using shortcuts and such, and said he could push it down to 60 if he knew shortcuts and other mechanics. Who knows how fast the next speedrun will be.
Dark Souls 3 will release on April 12 for PS4, Xbox One and PC. For more information, have a look at our full review.
Korean speedrunner Jung Ho Min completed Dark Souls 3, the latest in From Software’s now five-strong line of notoriously dense and difficult action-RPGs, in under two hours.
In just one hour and 42 minutes, Min breezed through to the game’s end. Notably, the run falls under the any-percentage class of speedruns, which allowed Min to bypass many bosses and areas entirely. The run was not tool-assisted, however, and any percentage runs are no less credible than the save states one player used to beat the original Dark Souls without being hit.
Min has actually speedran Dark Souls 3 twice since the game’s Japanese launch. His latest attempt shaved 14 minutes off his original time of one hour and 56 minutes. For comparison’s sake: one of the fastest any-percentage runs of the original Dark Souls clocked in at 51 minutes.
Dark Souls 3 will launch in the West on PS4, Xbox One and PC on Tuesday, April 12.
